"The defense of accident is a recluse: it is seldom seen and often misunderstood" -Judge Hill

Judge Hill of the SC Court of Appeals is never short of metaphorical language and great quotes. In this recent case State v. Owens, the court goes through the jury instruction of "accident." The defendant claimed both self defense and accident. The court explains how confusing and difficult it can be for a trial judge to instruct a jury on the two since one has intent and the other doesn't.
